Grade Calculator: Calculate Your Course Grade

The grade calculator determines your current or final grade in a course based on assignments, tests, and their weights. Most courses use weighted grading where different categories (homework, quizzes, exams, projects) contribute different percentages to your final grade. This calculator helps you understand your current standing, determine what scores you need on remaining work to achieve your target grade, and plan your study efforts effectively. Whether you're mid-semester wondering where you stand or calculating what you need on the final exam, this tool provides clarity on your academic performance.

Examples

Grade Calculation Example

Let's calculate your course grade. Your syllabus:
- Homework: 20% (current average: 92%)
- Quizzes: 15% (current average: 78%)
- Midterm: 25% (score: 84%)
- Final: 30% (not yet taken)
- Participation: 10% (current: 95%)

Current grade (without final): Homework: 92 × 0.20 = 18.4, Quizzes: 78 × 0.15 = 11.7, Midterm: 84 × 0.25 = 21.0, Participation: 95 × 0.10 = 9.5. Sum: 60.6 out of 70% completed. Current: 60.6 / 0.70 = 86.6%.

What do you need on the final for an A (90%)? Required: (90 - 60.6) / 0.30 = 98%. That's very high—you'd need 98% on the final. For a B+ (87%)? Required: (87 - 60.6) / 0.30 = 88%. Much more achievable.

The final is 30% of your grade—it matters a lot! If you get exactly 86.6% on the final, your final grade stays at 86.6%. Every point above or below shifts your grade by 0.3%. Plan your studying based on what's realistic and what you need.

Key properties

Weighted Grading: Category Percentages

Courses typically weight categories differently: Homework 20%, Quizzes 15%, Midterm 25%, Final 30%, Participation 10%. Your grade is the weighted average of category scores. Understanding weights helps prioritize effort.

Points vs. Percentages

Grades can be calculated by total points (earned/possible) or weighted percentages. Both methods can yield the same result if set up correctly. Understanding your course's system ensures accurate calculation.

Current Grade: Where You Stand

Your current grade is based on completed work. If you've done half the coursework at 85%, your current grade is 85%—but this could change. Understanding current grade helps with planning.

Remaining Work: What's Left

Incomplete categories still have potential impact. A 40% final exam can significantly raise or lower your grade. Understanding remaining weight shows stakes for upcoming work.

Target Grade: What You Need

Calculate what scores you need on remaining assignments to achieve A, B, or your target. Sometimes it's impossible, sometimes any passing grade will do. Understanding targets guides study effort.

Letter Grade Cutoffs

Standard cutoffs: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F<60%. Some schools use plus/minus (A-=90-93%). Understanding cutoffs shows exactly what you need.

Formulas

Weighted Average

Grade = Σ(Category Score × Category Weight) / Σ(Weights of Completed Categories)

Multiply each category's score by its weight, sum products, divide by sum of completed weights.

Points-Based Grade

Grade = Total Points Earned / Total Points Possible × 100%

If you earned 450 out of 500 points: 450/500 = 90%.

Required Score for Target

Required = (Target - Current × Current Weight) / Remaining Weight

To get 90% with current 85% (60% complete) and 40% remaining: (90 - 85×0.6) / 0.4 = 97.5% needed.

Drop Lowest Score

Average = (Sum - Lowest) / (Count - 1)

If lowest quiz is dropped: sum all quizzes, subtract lowest, divide by number minus one.

Grade Calculations for Academic Planning

Grade calculations are used for: tracking progress throughout the semester, determining current standing in a course, planning study time based on remaining work importance, calculating what's needed on finals for target grades, understanding how dropped assignments affect grades, and making informed decisions about course effort allocation. Understanding grade calculations helps students manage their academic workload strategically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my current grade?

Enter your assignments with scores and weights. We calculate your current grade based on completed work.

How do weighted grades work?

Each category (homework, exams, etc.) has a percentage weight. Your grade = Σ(score × weight).

What grade do I need on the final?

Enter your current grade, desired final grade, and final exam weight. We calculate required score.

How do I add a category?

Add category name, weight (percentage), and your scores. Common: Homework, Quizzes, Midterm, Final, Participation.

What if categories don't add to 100%?

We can either normalize weights or treat remaining as incomplete. Choose based on your syllabus.

How does 'drop lowest' work?

If your syllabus drops lowest quiz, enter all quiz scores. We drop the lowest automatically.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes. Enter earned points and possible points for each assignment. We calculate the percentage.

What's extra credit?

Extra credit adds points beyond possible. A 102% on homework if 2% extra credit was available.

How do I see what-if scenarios?

Enter hypothetical scores for incomplete work to see how they'd affect your final grade.

What are standard letter grade cutoffs?

A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, F<60. With plus/minus: A=93+, A-=90-92, B+=87-89, etc.

Can I customize grade cutoffs?

Yes. Enter your course's specific cutoffs if they differ from standard.

How do I handle missing assignments?

Mark incomplete assignments separately. They either count as zero or are excluded, depending on course policy.

What if I can't mathematically get an A?

We'll show 'Not possible' if the required score exceeds 100%. Helps set realistic expectations.

Can I save multiple courses?

Yes. Save each course's grade setup and track all your classes in one place.

Can I export my grade breakdown?

Yes. Export a summary showing all assignments, weights, and calculations.
